The turbo supplies compressed air for the engine to burn. When the engine revs suddenly drop (like, when you change gears or stop) there is nowhere for this air to go except backwards, the wrong way through the turbo. This is bad. Bypass valves avoid this by feeding the extra pressure back into the air intake system. Most factory bypass valves crap out under high boost! The leak fools the boost controller, which overworks the turbo to try and compensate. This makes the inlet temperature go the roof and you get no power!
